Chapter 11

Ciera dropped into the lounge chair in front of the television. Cody was asleep, and she finally had time to herself. Grabbing her cell, she tapped out a text.

> It was good to see you today.

Rolling her eyes, she deleted it. “God, what do I type? ‘Thank you for not killing us?’” She snorted and closed her eyes. That moment in time would forever be frozen in her mind because of what had happened and what she’d been attempting to do. She keyed letters into words and looked at the question she’d formed.

>Did you know we were trying to escape that night?

She hit send and put the phone down. When it vibrated and the face of the phone lit up beside her, she jumped. He hadn’t texted back. He was calling. She answered it and put the phone to her ear. “Hello?”

“I didn’t know,” his deep voice came across the connection.

“Kamau, the man you apprehended, he ahh… he wanted Cody.”

“Excuse me, you mean…”

“Ah, yeah. Cody told me he’d touched him in his private areas. I waited until Kamau would be upstairs with his men. We were going to run away. We had nothing, but I couldn’t let that happen to my baby again.”

“The way you moved when we entered that area, I don’t know why I didn’t…”

“Shoot us?” She heard what he’d said that night. She understood that her actions were stupid. She should have lifted her hands and not moved, but she saw American uniforms, and she… well, she acted without thinking.

“Yeah.” His voice was full of gravel, deep and thoughtful.

“Glad you didn’t.”

“Me too. It eats at me.”

God, he was being so honest. She closed her eyes; she’d be the same with him. “Not shooting?”

He sighed, “The fact that I could have killed you.”

“You didn’t. Maybe it was a God thing.” She wasn’t raised in a religious home, but Jumana had been very religious. She’d imparted some of her faith and beliefs to Ciera through long talks all those years in the kitchen together.

There was a pause before he spoke. “Something stopped me. It might have been a God thing. Are you okay? Do you need anything? I didn’t ask before.”

“We’ve got everything we could ever need. We are very content… except…”

“What?” he prompted.

“Cody will never be able to meet my mom and dad. They’ll never know I’m okay.”

“How long will you be in WitSec?” She heard him moving and then a sigh.

“Am I stopping you from going to sleep?” She looked at the clock. It was only eight-thirty.

“No, I just got comfortable. So, about WitSec?”

“We are with the program until there isn’t a threat against us. The US Attorney in charge of the case believes the organization that the big boss is involved with will search for me to prevent me from testifying. After that, it will be a wait and see type thing.” She nibbled on her thumbnail. The uncertainty was something she needed to talk to Doctor Wheeler about.

“So, no end date?”

“No.” She stared out the window.
